About Me

Phoebe Walker: Christchurch, New Zealand; Artist Statement: My interest in landscape comes from a rural North Canterbury upbringing. I have a strong connection with the expansive open spaces and sublime, ephemeral skyscapes of the countryside. The atmospheric effects of the weather and changing seasons over the constant form of the landscape have always fascinated me. This transience and the memory of how it was and how it will be again are central considerations in my work. Having lived in Christchurch for the past eight years, the magnetism I feel towards vast spaces which are irrelevant of the individual has only been strengthened by my urban surroundings. My work is based on a strong foundation of drawing. I use a camera as a drawing tool to take hundreds of snapshots of landscapes as I move through them. These collected moments are gathered, re-drawn and finally translated into paint as a collective ambiguous memory of the space I have traveled through. I have recently graduated from the Ilam School of Fine Arts, University of Canterbury and am currently studying to become a secondary school art teacher.
